Evaluation of the irradiation products in the MTR fuel elements of the IEA-R1 reactor

Description

An estimate of the radioactivities and quantities of fission products, plutonium-239 and neptunium-237 from irradiated MTR fuel elements of the IEA-R1 reactor, is presented. Such data were required for the projected studies relating to the reprocessing of fuel elements. Since the IEA-R1 reactor operates descontinuously, an average value for the irradiation time (thermal neutron flux, 1013 n.cm-2.sec-1) and burn-up of the fuel material has been utilized in the calculations

Abstract (Portuguese)

Um estudo das atividades e das quantidades dos produtos de fissao, bem como das quantidades de plutonio-239 e neptunio-239 de alguns dos elementos combustiveis, tipo MTR, do reator IEA-R1, e apresentado. Na elaboracao do esquema de tratamento do combustivel para a recuperacao dos elementos ferteis e fisseis, e importante o conhecimento do estado de irradiacao, pois, de acordo com este dado, ha uma variacao da concentracao de ferteis, fisseis e produtos de fissao. Devido ao regime de trabalho do reator IEA-R1, os elementos combustiveis experimentaram diferentes condicoes de irradiacao, razao pela qual os calculos apresentados sao estimativos, considerando-se um valor medio para a taxa de queima e um tempo de irradiacao continua a um fluxo termico medio de 1013 n.cm-2.s-1
