Description
Aqueous solutions of sulphur dioxide in the presence of 1M formic acid/formate ion in the pH range 2-6 were pulse irradiated. The data presented indicate that radical SO2-. is formed by the charge-transfer reaction CO2-. + SO2→SO2-. + CO2 with k=/7.6+-1/x108 s-1.SO2-. recombine to form S2O42- with rate constant 2k=/2.2+-0.3/x109 M-1s-1 /at μ approximately 1/. The radiation source was a 7 MeV microtron. Beam current and pulse length were in the range /10-100/mA and /0.5-4/ μs respectively. The investigation was carried out in the pH-range from 2 to 6 and all solutions with pH>3.5 were saturated with N2O. (F.Gy.)
