Description

In this paper we present Prognoz-8 observations of plasma and low-frequency (2-105Hz) waves in two different regions of the magnetospheric tail. Dense magnetosheathlike plasma clouds apparently detached from the magnetopause were encountered by Prognoz-8 near the high latitude nightside magnetopause. It was found that such plasma clouds inside the magnetosphere are always associated with strong wave activity at frequencies ωi < ω < ωLH (ωi -proton cyclotron frequency, ωLH - lower hybrid frequency). Another region within the magnetospheric tail with strong plasma turbulence was observed over the plasma sheet boundary layer. (author). 11 refs.; 4 figs
