Numerical design of plasma focus optimization

  • 1. Quaid-i-Azam Univ., Islamabad (Pakistan). Dept. of Physics

Description

A snowplow momentum equation describing the dynamic behaviour of high density Z-pinch is derived. Using ideal MHD model, various new effects like magnetic tension, kinetic pressure and the compressible nature of the plasma are incorporate. It is found that these effects conspire to give a reasonable value for the final pinch radius ratio. The analysis also suggests that the figure of merit nt in Z-pinch configuration may be enhanced manifold by choosing suitably the experimental parameters. The model is used for numerical optimization of a Plasma Focus as a function of apparatus dimensions, filling pressure and various circuit parameters. The results are found to be in agreement with the empirical values of the existing devices. 14 refs, fig, 1 tab
