Vertical distribution of 137Cs in undisturbed soil of Lithuania

  • 1. Inst. of Physics, Vilnius (Lithuania)

Description

The vertical distribution of 137Cs in undisturbed soil of meadows and forests of Lithuania was studied by using low-background gamma-spectroscopy. The 137Cs distribution profiles were investigated at 19 sites in meadows and at 50 sites in forests. The average 137Cs density in Lithuanian forests was found to be equal to 3.29 kBq/m3, while in meadows (mainly in the eastern and middle parts of Lithuania) - 2.48 kBq/m2. A great influence of litter on the 137Cs migration in forests was observed. On the average about 30% of 137Cs present in the upper soil layer remains in the forest litter
