PMT-photocurrent modulation by action of localized magnetic field

  • 1. Physico-Technical Inst., St. Petersburg (Russian Federation)

Description

To modulate the current of photoelectrons emitted by a small-sized area of the photocathode, it is proposed to use a localized pulsating magnetic field produced by the poles of an open-ring core electromagnet set near the face of the PMT-window. A modulation factor of 85% was obtained. The contribution of interferences to the alternating part of the output signal is one order of magnitude less than that made by the modulation when magnetic field acts over the entire volume of the PMT's cathode chamber. 1 ref., 3 figs., 1 tab
