Determination of trace elements in air particulate matter by means of instrumental neutron activation analysis

The concentrations (ng/m3) of more than 30 trace elements have been determined in the total air particulate matter and in the size segregated fractions collected in urban, industrialized and rural-residential areas in the Northern Italy by means of a multistage inertial impactor with the PM10 inlet. All measurements have been carried out by INAA (Instrumental Neutron Analysis) except for Pb, Cd which have been determined by ETAAS (Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy). Analytical quality assurance procedures have been developed with special regard to blanks, reagents and sampling. Total concentrations and the granulometric distribution found in the different locations are reported and compared

Abstract (Italian)

In questo lavoro vengono presentati alcuni risultati ottenuti nello studio dell'inquinamento atmosferico da parte di metalli e di altri elementi in tracce in zone urbane, suburbane-industrializzate e rurali-residenziali (Milano citta' e Cologno Monzese, Ispra). Oltre ai valori delle concentrazioni totali presenti nell'aria, sono stati misurate le distribuzioni granulometriche nel PM10 e nelle varie frazioni respirabili del particolato atmosferico. Utilizzando principalmente l'analisi per attivazione neuronica e, in qualche caso la spettrometria di assorbimento atomico si sono studiati piu' di trenta elemnti in tracce
