Esther Loop. Operation, instrumentation and measurements of thermodynamic properties of sulphur

Description
To improve the efficiency of thermal or nuclear power plants, Electricite de France (EDF) has considered introducing a sulfur cycle as a head cycle to replace the water vapour boiler, the sulfur cycle yielding its condensation heat to the already existing water cycle. A sulfur loop has been built at the CEA to: - verify the thermodynamic diagram of sulfur established during a theoretic study. - estimate the harshness of the chemical transformations that are established when expanding in a nozzle. - measure the thermal exchange coefficients between the walls and the boiling and steam sulfur. - check the corrosion of a tube internally coated with aluminum-titanium, under conditions of industrial use. The Esther experience (divided into two loops, one in liquid sulphur, the other in steam sulphur) is then presented and described. This experience is fully piloted by two multi-tasking microcomputers. The instrumentation used for temperature, pressure, level, flowrate is described as well as the calibrations of these various devices. An original method of calibrating the thyristors blocks used to supply the heating elements of the steam loop has been developed, allowing to know the power provided to each area of the coil by knowing the control voltage of each thyristors block. Various tests have been carried out, with a good agreement between the experimental results and theoretic calculation of the thermodynamic diagram of sulphur. Two methods of calculating exchange coefficients are proposed, one for a nucleated boiling, - the other for a liquid film boiling. (author)

Pour ameliorer le rendement des centrales thermiques ou nucleaires, Electricite de France (EDF) a envisage d'introduire un cycle a soufre comme cycle de tete en remplacement de la chaudiere a vapeur d'eau. Le cycle a soufre cedant sa chaleur de condensation au cycle a eau deja existant. Une boucle a soufre a ete construite au Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (CEA) pour: - verifier le diagramme thermodynamique du soufre etabli lors d'une etude theorique prealable. - estimer les durees des transformations chimiques qui s'etablissent lors des detentes dans une tuyere. - mesurer les coefficients d'echange thermique entre les parois et le soufre en ebullition et en vapeur. - verifier la tenue a la corrosion d'un tube revetu interieurement d'aluminium - titane, dans des conditions d'utilisation industrielle. Nous effectuons une presentation et une description de l'experience Esther, qui se divise en deux boucles: l'une en soufre liquide, l'autre en soufre vapeur. Cette experience est entierement pilotee par deux micro-ordinateurs multitaches. Nous decrivons ensuite l'instrumentation utilisee pour les mesures de temperature, de pression, de niveau, de debit ainsi que les etalonnages de ces divers dispositifs. Une methode originale d'etalonnage des blocs thyristors servant a l'alimentation des elements chauffants de la boucle vapeur, a ete developpee. Elle permet de connaitre la puissance fournie a chaque zone du serpentin en connaissant la tension de commande de chaque bloc thyristors. Cette experience a necessite le developpement de procedes de regulation: de temperature, de pression, de niveau. Pour les divers essais realises, nous constatons un bon accord entre les resultats experimentaux et le calcul theorique du diagramme TS du soufre. Deux methodes de calcul des coefficients d'echange sont proposees: - l'une pour une ebullition nuclee, - l'autre pour une ebullition de liquide en film. (auteur)Files
