Transmission and system operator options for Nova Scotia : final report

Description

This study was conducted to identify and assess opportunities and challenges related to an expansion of Nova Scotia's (NS) provincial and regional transmission system, and to evaluate various system operator alternatives. The study was prepared to help with the development of future policy options for transmission and system operator activities and decisions. An overview of demand, potential environmental considerations, and electricity resources was provided. Three time frames were considered: (2) a short-term time frame from the present to 2012, (2) a medium-term time frame discussing the prospects of transmission system development and renewable energy source development up to 2015, and (3) a long-term time frame discussing the prospects of the transmission system beyond 2020. The study showed that wind power will likely become a major resource in the province, but should be developed in locations that do not increase current system stresses. Interties with other jurisdictions will be required for the province to meet its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets. 25 refs., 15 tabs., 17 figs.
