Steam generator tube rupture consequence mitigation

  • 1. Energy Inc., Idaho Falls

Description

In the event of a steam generator tube rupture, operator response plays an important role in minimizing environmental releases and bringing the plant to a shutdown condition. To aid the operator during such an event, utility owners' groups have developed procedures that describe appropriate actions to take as the the transient progresses. This paper provides best-estimate evaluation of such procedures through a RETRAN-03 analysis of various steam generator tube rupture scenarios in a Westinghouse two-loop plant. In addition, an evaluation of the improved numerics in RETRAN-03 is presented indicating dramatic improvements over the computing time required for similar analyses using RETRAN-02
