Radioisotopic evaluation of ESWL after effects

Description

Post extracorporeal Shock-wave lithotripsy [ESWL] effects on renal function such as GFR, relative function and time to maximum were studied in patients by using /sup 99/Tc-m-DTPA. Quantitative analysis showed that the patients who development obstructive nephropathy after ESWL, time to maximum increased significantly [p<0.001] while GFR decreased by more than 8% (in 18% patients at 24 hours, in 35% patients at 1 week and in 45% patients at 3 weeks). The incidence of developing outflow obstruction was seen to be directly proportional to the size of calculus. Furthermore, time to maximum was found to be a sensitive parameter for early detection of renal outflow obstruction that may occur after ESWL treatment. (author)
