Instrumentation for automatic diameter and eddy-current measurement of irradiated LWR fuel rods in the HFR pool

  • 1. Commission of the European Communities, Petten (Netherlands). Joint Nuclear Research Center

Description

The programme of tests on Light Water Reactor fuel in the High Flux Reactor (HFR) at Petten, has necessitated the installation of specialised under-water inspection equipment in the HFR pool for eddy current and diameter scanning of the fuel rods before and after irradiation. The inspection measurements provide valuable information on the state and physical dimensions of the fuel cladding after being irradiated under simulated power reactor conditions. A laboratory computer used with the fuel inspection facility, stores measurement data on floppy disc for further analysis. The paper includes a brief description of the test equipment and instrumentation used, together with a comprehensive account of the computerised data collection and treatment system as applied to these particular measurements.
