Short electrode length quenched N2 laser

Description
A simple quenching method is presented to reduce the pulse duration of N2 lasers by placing a quartz plate or a semi-transparent mirror in front of the laser tube. Using this method a 2...3 fold reduction of pulse duration can be achieved. Using a transversally excited atmospheric pressure (TEA) N2 laser having an electrode length of 2 cm, 120 ps long pulses were generated. The pulses of this TEA laser were amplified by a TE low pressure N2 amplifier. In this way pulses having duration of 180 ps and 250 ΜJ energy have been obtained. (orig.)
