Vitrification of low- and intermediate-level wastes
Description
Vitrification of high-level and intermediate-level radioactive wastes has been studied by the Nuclear Research Institute at Rez on laboratory and semi-pilot-plant scales. Major achievements of the vitrification laboratory over the recent years are highlighted, with emphasis on wastes arising from the operation of WWER type reactors, where laboratory and pilot scale testing has been accomplished. Progress has been achieved in cooperation with French laboratories engaged in the field in question. Particular attention was paid to glass systems containing nonconventional components such as chromium. Technology and the corresponding equipment have been developed for the Bohunice A-1 nuclear power plant in Slovakia, and similar systems were studied on a contractual basis for some foreign companies. 2 tabs., 4 figs., 7 refs
