Detection of Deuterated cyanoacetylene in the interstellar cloud TMC 1

Description
Deuterated cyanoacetylene has been observed for the first time in an interstellar cloud, TMC 1, by the detection of emission from its J=5→4 transition at 42.2 GHz. Comparison of DC3N with HC3N implies that the abundance ratio DC3N/HC3N is larger than that observed for DCO+/HCO+. This larger enhancement of deuterium indicates that HC3N in this cloud is formed by gasphase ion-molecule reactions rather than by catalysis on grain surfaces or the dissociation of even longer molecules formed in stellar atmospheres
