Cryogenic source of polarized deuterons
- 1. Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (USSR)
Description
A cryogenic source and Penning ionizer for obtaining a polarized deuteron beam at the JINR synchrophasotron are described. The source can also be used as a jet-polarized target in the internal beam of the accelerator. Deuterium dissociation and atomic beam formation in the source occur at low temperatures. Gas is evacuated by cryopumps. A superconducting sextupole magnet with a 1.0 T field separates the hyperfine structure components of the atoms. The beam is ionized in a field of up to 7 T. The source operates in a pulsed mode. Design and performance data are given
