A new technique for measuring pulse height of fast protons
Description
A technique for measuring the proton pulse height by converting it into a form of a gate, by an electronic system, is described. Any variation in the pulse height caused a change in the gate width. The number of the oscillator pulses in the gate width was directly proportional to the width and, in turn, to the pulse height. Measurements on the pulse height were made to correct the data for the slow protons and to compare the gain of a system of six thick scintillation counters employed to detect the nucleons in a missing mass experiment. Each of these counters contained 30-cm long plastic scintillator of diameter 30 cm. It has been found that fast protons and pions loose about 2 MeV/cm energy in passing through the plastic scintillator. The experiment was performed to study the production and decay of the boson B in the interactions π- + p → B- + p or π- + p → B0 + n (near its production threshold). (author)
