Electromagnetic production of lepton pairs in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Description
Probabilities and cross sections for the production of lepton pairs in relativistic heavy ion collisions are evaluated in the first order time dependent perturbation theory and using the Sommerfeld-Maue wave functions for the lepton pair. Useful analytical expressions for the production of low and highly energetic pairs are obtained. These results are compared with those existent in the literature, new physical aspects are discussed, up to now unexplored, and applications are made to some heavy ion reactions. (author)

Calculam-se as probabilidades e secoes de choque para a criacao de pares eletron-positron em colisoes nucleares relativisticas utilizando as funcoes de onda de Sommerfeld-Maue para o par. Comparam-se esses resultados com os existentes na literatura, discutem-se aspectos fisicos novos, ate entao inexplorados, e aplicacoes sao feitas as reacoes relativisticas com ions pesados.
