Results of the ''Hyperon'' superconducting magnet testing

Description

A brief description of the design of the GIPERON superconducting magnet is given and results of its tests are presented. The basic elements of the solenoid-type magnet are a superconducting excitation winding, a helium cryostat and a magnetic circuit. The superconducting winding comprises two cylindrical coils assembled of 9 two-layer sections each. The winding is located in the helium cryostat. The cryostat is completely surrounded by an iron yoke 80 cm thick which passes the whole magnetic flux. Cooling of the superconducting winding which weighs 9 t is carried out in three stages. It takes 9 days to prepare the magnet for operation. During the tests the magnetic field in the center of the magnet working volume (its internal diameter is 1 m and height is 0.2 m) reached 6.3 T. Energy stored by the magnet equals 22.3 MJ. The winding maximum supply current is 2.5 kA. Special consideration has been given to the effect of induced currents on the value and distribution of the magnetic field. It has been found that this effect is insignificant: the residual field in the magnet center at a zero load current does not exceed 6 Gs. The reliability of the whole facility has been tested at the 2.4 kA current during 36 h. The superconducting magnet is used in the facility to shape beams of hyperons and K deg-mesons at the Serpukhov accelerator
