Nature of radicals and mechanism of low-temperature radiolysis of cellulose

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Fizicheskoj Khimii

Description

The radicals have been investigated by the EPR method in cellulose γ-irradiated at 77 and 300 deg K. Stabilization of electrons in intermolecular traps has been revealed. The radicals arise, mainly, as a result of the C=H bond rupture in weakened positions 1 (doublet with splitting approximately 25 e) and 4 (triplet with splitting approximately 30e). The kinetiks of radical accumulation has been studied. It has been found that the radicals are destroyed by irradiation in the first-order reaction (K=7.7x10-2 Mrad-1). The mechanism has been discussed of low-temperature radiolysis of cellulose proceeding from the formation and subsequent reactions of separate ionic pairs
