Description

The state of radioactive elements in reactor-irradiated aqueous-alcohol solutions has been investigated. A qualitative chemical analysis has shown that Cr, Mn, Fe and Ni are present in the irradiated solutions, which is confirmed by gamma spectroscopy data. The presence of radioactive isotopes in the solutions is mainly associated with corrosion of the reaction vessel made of the Kh18N10T stainless steel. It has been found that radioactivity of solutions rapidly decreases in time. It means that a substantial part of activity in solutions is specified by the short-lived isotopes of 56Mn, 24Na and 38Cl. By ion exchange, centrifugation and filtration it has been stated that radioisotopes are present in solutions primarily in colloidal form. Colloidal features of radioisotopes are accounted for Mn, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cl being adsorbed by the colloids available in the solution which are formed from corrosion products. It has been shown that by sorption on Fe(OH)3, the solution evaporation and holding, it is possible to purify rather effectively aqueous-alcohol solutions from the radioactive isotopes of Cf, Fe, Mn, Ni, Na, Cl
