Correlative analysis between plasma S100B concentration and computed tomographic manifestations in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between computed tomographic manifestations and plasma S100B concentration in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage. Methods: Plasma S100B concentration in one hundred and ten patients with acute basal ganglia hemorrhage and 110 healthy controls were measured using ELISA. The change of plasma S100B level and its correlation with computed tomographic manifestation was analyzed statistically. Results: Plasma S100B level was significantly higher in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage than in healthy controls(242.6 ± 112.7 pg/ml vs. 54.2 ± 15.3 pg/ml; P < 0.001). Plasma S100B level was markedly associated with hematoma volumes(P < 0.001). Plasma S100B level in patients with intraventricular hemorrhage was obviously higher in patients without intraventricular hemorrhage(P < 0.05). Conclusion: Plasma S100B concentration are highly correlated with hematoma volumes and intraventricular hemorrhage, this may serve as a marker and also a reflection of disease severity. (authors)
