The international price of CO2. Determinants and estimations

There is not one international price for CO2 emission reduction. Prices are prognoses, calculated by models, based on different assumptions. Therefore, a literature study has been carried out to gain insight into the meaning of available prices and how they are calculated. In chapter 2 a description is given of the market in which the trade of CO2 emission rights are taking place. Attention is paid to the emission trade as a tool, the agreements that are the result of the Kyoto protocol, and preconditions for the emission trade. The results of the literature study are presented and discussed in chapter 3. In chapter 4 it is discussed whether specific measures should be taken in one's own country or abroad. This report comprises 8 appendices: (A) overview of the most important agreements formulated at the sixth Conference of Parties (CoP6), which was held in The Hague, Netherlands, November 2000; (B) results of the CoP6; (C) explanation of the choice for the prevention cost method; (D) analysis of the literature; (E) explanation of the emission trade system for SO2 in the USA; (F) state of the art of the emission trade for regional airports; (G) and (H) global, respectively European, political developments with respect to air transport. 19 refs
