Heavy gauge plates for nuclear application

Description

The production of energy from nuclear sources leads to the building of very large vessels working under pressure at elevated temperatures, requiring very thick steel plate (from 50 mm to 300 mm). The plates necessary for the production of these vessels have to be as large as possible in order to reduce the length of welds on the vessels. Those two requirements lead to the manufacture of heavy products from 10 to 80 tons unit weight. These products are special, because their fabrication requires very big facilities and also extremely high quality of the steel. The main points are: high cleanliness; properties as homogeneous as possible. The tests carried out on industrially produced plates (especially on a plate of 200 mm thick show the level of quality that can be reached

Abstract (French)

La production d'energie d'origine nucleaire necessite la construction de tres gros reservoirs qui travaillent sous des pressions et des temperatures elevees, et qui conduisent a l'emploi de plaques de tres forte epaisseur (de 50 a 300 mm). Les plaques necessaires a la construction de ces cuves doivent avoir les plus grandes dimensions possibles pour reduire le nombre de soudures sur l'appareil. Ces deux imperatifs conduisent a fabriquer des produits de poids unitaire tres eleve, de 10 a 80 tonnes. Ces produits sont specifiques car leur fabrication necessite des outils de capacite peu commune, et parce qu'ils doivent etre de tres haute qualite. Les points essentiels sont: une grande proprete; une homogeneite des proprietes aussi grande que possible. A l'aide d'essais effectues sur des toles de fabrication industrielle (notamment sur une tole de 200 mm d'epaisseur), on montre le niveau de qualite qu'il est possible d'atteindre
