Contribution for characterizing the shape of flaws by ultrasonic inspection

Description

By calculating the impulse response is possible to isolate characteristics from the ultrasonic echo of a flaw, which are typical for the type of flaw. From these characteristics it is possible to estimate the properties of the flaw like size, shape and orientation. For model reflectors these characteristics can be theoretically calculated. The agreement with experiments is good. Deviations can be explained and calculated theoretically. On this basis measurements have been done on artificial flaws with a simplified method under practical conditions. The results were well reproducible also under changing experimental conditions. Abstract (German)

Aus dem Ultraschallecho einer Ungaenze koennen durch Ermittlung der Impulsantwort Merkmale isoliert werden, die fuer die Ungaenze wie Groesse, Form und Lage, zurueckgeschlossen werden kann. Fuer Modellreflektoren sind diese Merkmale leicht theoretisch berechenbar. Die Uebereinstimmung mit dem Experiment ist gut, zumal auftretende Abweichungen theoretisch erklaert und berechnet werden koennen. Auf dieser Grundlage aufbauend wurden mit einer vereinfachten Methode Messungen an kuenstlichen Ungaenzen unter praxisaehnlichen Bedingungen durchgefuehrt, deren Ergebnisse auch bei veraenderten Versuchsparametern gut reproduzierbar waren.
