Application of the Monte-Carlo method in projecting radiometric instruments for industrial application

  • 1. Institutul de Fizica Atomica, Bucharest (Romania)

Description

Computer software is described for mathematical simulation of the photone generation process from radiation sources; gamma-photones interaction with different media and their detection by means of the Geiger-Mueller and scintillation counters. The method permits to find optimal solutions for different radiation sources and different geometries in projecting industrial radiometric equipment for measuring and control. According to the energy or angular distributions of photones ourside or inside the moderating media it is possible to obtain information about the parameters of the moderating media measured. For example: measuring of such parameters as density, thickness, level, moisture. In the radioactive media, or media labelled by radioactivity, for example, during boring boreholes in the radioactive minerals containing strata, it is possible to obtain information about concentrations of the radioactivity in them. These radioactivity distributions can indicate a zone of the emitted or scattered photones, optimum for the detector's location and to have parameters of measurement with the demanded accuracy. The energy distribution of photones in the place selected for a detector location permits to establish photones energy range having maximum intensity and hence to determine the detector selection or selection of the detection threshold in such a way that to obtain the highest sensitivity in the energy range where photones intensity is maximum
