Upgrading of nuclear reactor display systems

  • 1. Walton Radar Systems Ltd., Farnborough (UK)

Description

Computerized control systems have to operate safely and reliably without needing constant attention. Complex systems are therefore inflexible and difficult to up-date. This is often the case in nuclear power plants. However, the systems built into the AGR reactors at Heysham-1 and Hartlepool in the 1970s have been successfully upgraded by installing 1980s computer technology, without disruption to the continuous power operation of the power station. The way this has been achieved is discussed and descriptions of the old and new systems are given. (U.K.)
