Effect of finite resistivity on the dynamic stability of a composite plasma
Description
The dynamic stability of a composite hydromagnetic plasma has been investigated to include simultaneously the effects of collisions with neutrals, Hall currents and finite resistivity. The prevalent magnetic field is assumed to be uniform and horizontal. It is first shown that the solution is characterized by a variational principle. The explicit solution has then been obtained, by making use of the existence of the variational principle, for a semi-infinite composite plasma in which the density has a one-dimensional gradient along the vertical. It is found that the influence of the simultaneous inclusion of the effects of finite resisitivity, Hall currents and frictional effects with neutrals is destabilizing.
