Serum immunoglobulins in head and neck cancer: effect of radiotherapy

Twenty-five patients with head and neck cancer and 25 age-matched normal controls were investigated for serum, immunoglobulin levels (IgA, IgG and IgM). The levels of all the three immunoglobulins in the patients were significantly higher than controls, the rise in IgA being more than that of IgG or IgM. The ratios of IgA/IgG and IgA/IgM were also higher than normal. The immunoglobulin levels showed a progressive rise with the advance in stage of the tumour. A fall in the immunoglobulin levels, as well as in the ratios of IgA/IgG and IgA/IgM, was noted following radiotherapy though the levels were still higher than controls. The range of increase in immunoglobulins appears to be a satisfactory prognostic tool, and a fall after radiotherapy appears to be related to the effectiveness of treatment.
