Description
This paper supplements and extends a recently published paper on frequency and sequency domain filtering of nuclear spectral data by the authors. It treats a nuclear spectrum as a digital signal and finds constraints in terms of spectral resolution, Γ, such that aliasing does not occur and quantization noise is insignificant. The work of frequency domain filtering is extended by finding further constraints on Γ so that sufficient guardband is assured to minimize Gibbs oscillations in the filtered data. It is found that Γ or more than 4 channels ensures that the problem of aliasing, quantization noise and Gibbs oscillations is not there. A mathematical derivation of the relation for the optimum smoothing parameter, σN = N/25, is also included. (orig.)
