Description
The safety analysis performed for the operational phase of the planned repository in the former Konrad iron ore mine has reviewed, in an iterative process, the extent to which the design of the plant itself and the design of the water packages to be disposed of meet the safety requirements in the case of normal operation and design basis incidents. The investigations have shown that a repository can be designed in such a way that incidents can be avoided or controlled and that radiation exposure remains below the dose limits set by the Radiation Protection Ordinance of the Federal Republic of Germany for normal operation and incidents. Results of these investigations form the basis of defined safety requirements to be met by the design and construction of the Konrad repository and/or the waste packages. These requirements ensure that even under incident conditions no inadmissible radiological effects may arise. Experimental investigations of retention processes within the facility are taken into account. (author)
