Novel composition and production process for a coating material

Description

An easily hardenable composition having a high degree of polymerization, a low volatility, low viscosity and properties comparable to thermosetting acryl coatings is disclosed, employing active energy irradiation, particularly electron beams and ultraviolet light, using a composition which consists essentially of an unsaturated compound having vinyl radicals at both ends. This composition can be produced by a process which comprises the steps of primarily reacting saturated cyclocarboxylic anhydride and/or alpha-beta-ethylene unsaturated carboxylic anhydrides by addition with a hydroxyl radical-containing vinyl monomer, and secondarily reacting a polyepoxy compound of 100-1,000 epoxy equivalent by addition with carboxylic radicals produced by the primary reaction. Each reaction is conducted in the presence of a tertiary amino radical-containing vinyl monomer. In one example, a non-solvent type coating was produced by heating at first 1.3 parts of 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate, 100 parts of succinic acid, 2 parts of dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate and 0.3 parts of hydroquinone monomethyl ether at 950C for 1 hour. Then, 180 parts of Epikote No.828 were added and the mixture was heated at 950C for 6 hours. A radically polymerizable low molecular compound (oligomer) was produced in which 90% of carboxyl radicals reacted with epoxy radicals to form divinyl construction. (Iwakiri, K.)
