Nuclear reactor lid cooling which can work by natural circulation

Description

The well-known air cooling of the lid of liquid metal cooled nuclear reactors is improved by the start of natural convection flow ensuring removal of heat in a sufficiently short time, if the blower fails. Go and return branches of the individual cooling circuits are arranged at different heights for this purpose. The circulation is supported by opening valves, which provide a direct path into the reactor building for the cooling air. The draught can be increased by setting up special chimneys. The start of circulation is aided by the temporary opening of another valve. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Die bekannte Luftkuehlung des Deckels von fluessigmetallgekuehlten Kernreaktoren wird dahingehend verbessert, dass auch bei Ausfall der Geblaese in hinreichend kurzer Zeit eine die weitere Waermeabfuhr besorgende natuerliche Konvektionsstroemung in Gang kommt. Hierzu sind hin- und rueckfuehrende Teile der einzelnen Kuehlkreislaeufe in unterschiedlicher Hoehe angeordnet. Die Zirkulation wird durch das Oeffnen von Klappen unterstuetzt, die der Kuehlluft einen unmittelbaren Weg in das Reaktorgebaeude bahnen. Die Zugwirkung kann durch das Aufsetzen besonderer Kamine verstaerkt werden. Das Ingangkommen der Zirkulation wird durch das voruebergehende Oeffnen einer weiteren Klappe beguenstigt. (orig.)
