Kinetics of Am(VI) reduction in formate solutions

Description

The reaction of Am(VI) with HCO2H and HCO2- is studied by spectrophotometry. The reaction is first-order in Am(VI). Increasing [HCO2-] increases the rate and is accompanied by formation of the Am(VI) formate complex of reduced reactivity compared with AmO22+. The apparent activation energy in the range 25-48 degrees C is 60.7 ± 5.7 kJ/mole. The reaction products in solutions of pH 0.3-4 are Am(V) and Am(III) in a 1:0.25 ratio. Only Am(V) accumulates in solutions with pH > 4. A mechanism is discussed that includes formation of the activated complex through replacement of a H2O in the Am(VI) coordination sphere by HCO2-. Replacement of two H2O renders the complex unreactive. Traces of Pt accelerate the Am(VI) reduction. 12 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs
