Description

The use of the perturbed angular correlation/distribution (PAC/PAD) techniques to study nuclei as probes in solids via the nuclear quadrupole interaction is described. The understanding of field gradients in metals, including those at impurity sites, has reached a quantitative stage. In cubic metals impurity atoms lead to field gradients, that allow the study of short range order and diffusion in alloys. Similarly implantation induced defects have been widely studied. Recent applications of PAC for surface problems have given a detailed picture of adatom diffusion for some model systems
