Description

The estimates of Vesta's effective size and the reconstructed images for three moments near the opposition of 1988 are presented based on speckle interferometry with the 1-m telescope (Mt. Maidanak). Processing of the speckle interferograms was carried out with the coherent optical processor of Kharkov Astronomical observatory. The difference between the speckle interferometric estimates of Vesta's size and its diffraction limited images synthesized with the shift-and-add method is caused by the discrepancy between the adopted model (uniformly bright elliptical disk) and the true appearance of the object. However the details of the reconstructed images could be interpreted both as albedo features and irregularities of the edge with the same amount of uncertainty which is due to low signal-to-noise ratio
