Electron heating in a supercritical shock wave

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow (USSR). Inst. Kosmicheskikh Issledovanij

Description

Different mechanisms, which may result in heating of solar wind electrons at collisionaless shock wave, are considered. Measurement results of plasma and field parameters, within the front of the near-earth quasiperpendicular, supercritical shock wave, recorded in one of its intersections by Prognoz-10-Interkosmos satellite (Soviet-Czechoslovakian INTERSHOCK project) are discussed. The main heating is shown to occur in the nearest (a few seconds) vicinity of magnetic field electron jump. The estimations prove, that such processes as plasma adiabatic compression within the front and electron interaction with high amplitude electromagnet oscillations contribute essentially to this heating
