As safe as houses [- the radon gas problem]
Description
Radon, part of the natural background radiation, is estimated to cause the death of 900 people a year in Britain. Radon levels are highest in Devon and Cornwall and can enter homes through the floor to give rise to a hazardous level in buildings. The government has agreed that action to reduce the radon levels should be taken in houses where the annual exposure is 20 millisieverts (mSv) for old houses and 5 mSv for new ones. This level is considered too high. Also, the delay in taking action whilst more surveys are undertaken is criticised. The poor level of information dissemination on the issue of radon is also criticised. (UK)
