Synthesis of mixed disilicides/SiC composites by displacement reaction between metal carbides and silicon
Description
Displacement reactions between metallic carbides (of Mo, W, Ta and Nb) and Si have been used for the preparation of mixed disilicide/SiC composite materials (Mo-W)Si2/SiC and (Nb-Ta)Si2/SiC. Pieces were consolidated by hot pressing and subsequently analysed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and microhardness testing. Mixed-disilicide/SiC composites were easy to obtain, pieces exhibiting a very homogeneous microstructure and strength and toughness
