Radiation exposure of the public in west Cumbria due to discharges from BNFL, Sellafield

  • 1. National Radiological Protection Board, Chilton (UK)

Description

A summary is given of a NRPB report which has used published information on environmental measurements and on discharges to sea and atmosphere from the Sellafield site to estimate present and past annual average committed effective dose equivalents to members of the public in West Cumbria from the known exposure pathways. On the basis of the available evidence, it appears that the largest doses to members of the public in any one year were as a result of the Windscale reactor fire in 1957. (U.K.)
