The microstructure and properties of SWV9 steel after laser melting

  • 1. Wydzial Metalurgii i Inzynierii Materialowej, AGH, Cracow (Poland)

Description

The structure and properties of laser treated nonledeburic wear resistant tool steel (SWV9) have been investigated. The influence of laser treatment parameters (power, beam diameter and scanning velocity) on melted zone properties was studied. The microstructure, chemical homogeneity and hardness distribution in the surface layer have been measured. Laser melting resulted in increased hardness up to 1200-1300 HV65. However, such treatment induced appearance of cracks network perpendicular to the melted surface through the boundaries of the eutectic colonies. Initial heating of samples up to 500oC before laser treatment enables obtaining layer without cracks network. (author)
