Inertia welding of zirconium to dissimilar metals
Description
The author reports on the technique of inertia welding investigated to join zirconium with other materials of construction for use in the chemical process industry. Inertia welding, a method used commonly to join ferrous materials, was found to be a highly successful method of joining the reactive metals as well. One of the greatest benefits of inertia welding is that it can be used to join dissimilar metals which are either extremely difficult or impossible to join by other methods. Also, because no alloying occurs at the weld joint, the corrosion resistance will not be degraded as is usually the case in fusion welding dissimilar metals
