System integration for the disposal of defense transuranic waste
Description
In this paper the defense transuranic waste disposal system managed by the Department of Energy, and the approach used for system integration are described. Originally, system integration concentrated on the logistical aspects of operational readiness for disposal. It is now recognized that postclosure requirements of the repository have a larger impact on the disposal system than requirements related to operation. Consequently, the use of performance assessment as a tool for systems analysis has expanded. Also, system integration and strategic planning efforts are increasing in order to manage the program more effectively in the face of technical, regulatory, and institutional uncertainties
