Transport of storage container for radioactive materials, particularly for irradiated nuclear reactor fuel elements

The container consists of a tank with closing lid. The tank has a metal outer skin, a cast metal intermediate layer and an inner protective skin made of stainless steel. The outer and intermdiate layers are cast from and iron-carbon or Cu alloy, where the intermediate layer may be made as a cast matrix with embedded depleted uranium pellets. The outer and intermediate layers are made as a standard casting made of cast iron with graphite pellets. The outer layer has channels filled with absorber and/or moderator material. The inside of the container can be filled with water or emptied via pipelines. (DG)
