Description
The fundamental principle applied in the UK to risks from nuclear accidents is the alarp principle, which specifies that the risks should be made as low as reasonably practicable. One of the consequences of the alarp principle is that consideration of accidents does not stop at the design basis boundary. Severe accident analysis plays a small but significant part in the UK research into PWR safety issues. This article was first given as a paper at the 16th water reactor safety information meeting organised by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at Gaithersburg MD, USA October 1988. (author)
