Stabilization of Uranium Monocarbide and Production of Single-Phase Carbide
Description
To obtain single-phase uranium carbide, we subjected uranium carbide with 3.5 to 8 wt.% of carbon to arc melting in a mixed argon-nitrogen atmosphere and a mixed argon-air atmosphere. The carbon and nitrogen contents of the final product were checked and found to depend on the partial pressure of nitrogen and oxygen. As a result of melting in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere, the carbide becomes impregnated with nitrogen. The carbon content also increases, as a result of contamination by the graphite electrode. By this process, a sub-stoichiometric carbide could be made stoichiometric. Melting in a mixed argon-nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere brings about a decrease in the carbon content as a result of a reaction between the carbides and the oxygen. The nitrogen content also increases. The nitrogen reacts with the free uranium to form uranium mononitride, which passes in solution into the uranium monocarbide. Thus, the melting of uranium carbides in the presence of oxygen and nitrogen yields a single-phase uranium carbonitride. (author)
Abstract (French)
En vue de l'obtention de carbure d'uranium monophase, des fusions a l'arc de carbure d' uranium contenant de 3,5 a 8% de C (en poids) ont ete realisees sous atmosphere mixte argon/azote, d'une part, et argon/air, d'autre part. Les teneurs en carbone et en azote du produit final ont ete controlees et dependent de la pression partielle en azote et en oxygene. Par fusion sous atmosphere argon/azote, le carbure se charge en azote. La teneur en carbone augmente egalement; ceci est le resultat d'une contamination par l'electrode en graphite. Ce procede permettrait de rendre stoechiometrique un carbure sous-stoechiometrique. La fusion sous une atmosphere mixte argon/azote/oxygene produit une diminution de la teneur en carbone par reaction entre les carbures et l'oxygene. La teneur en azote augmente egalement. L'azote reagit avec l'uranium libre pour former le mononitrure d'uranium qui pisse en solution dans le monocarbure d'uranium. La fusion de carbures d'uranium en presence d'oxygene et d'azote permet donc l'obtention d'un carbonitrure d'uranium monophase. (author)Abstract (Spanish)
Con el proposito de obtener un carburo de uranio de fase unica, el autor llevo a cabo ensayos de fusion de carburos de uranio con 3,5 a 8% de carbono en peso, sometiendolos al arco electrico en atmosfera mixta de argon y nitrogeno, por una parte, y de argon y aire, por otra. Verifico el contenido de carbono y de nitrogeno del producto final y comprobo que depende de la tension parcial de nitrogeno y de oxigeno. Al ser fundido en atmosfera de argon y nitrogeno, el carburo se enriquece en nitrogeno. Tambien aumenta el contenido de carbono; ello se debe a la contaminacion por el electrodo de grafito. Este procedimiento permitiria transformar un carburo infraestequiometrico en carburo estequiometrico. La fusion en atmosfera mixta de argon, nitrogeno y oxigeno produce una disminucion del contenido de carbono, debido a la reaccion entre los carburos y el oxigeno. Aumenta igualmente el contenido de nitrogeno. El nitrogeno reacciona con el uranio libre para formar el mononitruro de uranio que se disuelve en el monocarburo de uranio. De este modo, la fusion de los carburos de uranio en presencia de oxigeno y de nitrogeno permite obtener un carbonitruro de uranio de fase unica. (author)Abstract (Russian)
Dlya polucheniya monofazovogo karbida urana byli proizvedeny v smeshannoj atmosfere argon/azot i argon/vozdukh dugovye splavleniya karbidov urana, soderzhashchikh ot 3,5 do 8% C. Bylo opredeleno soderzhanie ugleroda i azota v konechnom produkte i ustanovleno, chto ono zavisit ot partsial'nogo davleniya azota i kisloroda. V protsesse splavleniya v atmosfere argon/azot karbid nasyshchaetsya azotom. Vozrastaet takzhe soderzhanie ugleroda, chto yavlyaetsya rezul'tatom zagryazneniya grafitovym ehlektrodom. Ehtot metod, vidimo, pozvolit prevrashchat' podstekhiometricheskij karbid v stekhiometricheskij. Splavlenie v smeshannoj atmosfere argona, azota i kisloroda privodit k umen'shenie soderzhaniya ugleroda, poskol'ku proiskhodit reaktsiya mezhdu karbidami i kislorodom. Vozrastaet takzhe soderzhanie azota. Azot vystupaet v reaktsiyu so svobodnym uranom i obrazuet mononitrid urana, kotoryj perekhodit v rastvor v vide monokarbida urana. Splavlenie karbidov urana v atmosfere kisloroda i azota pozvolyaet poluchat' monofaznyj karbonitrid urana. (author)Additional details
