Study by transmission electron microscopy of phase transitions induced by irradiation

Description

Conventional as well as high voltage electron microscopy are the key tools for the understanding of irradiation induced phase transitions. Together with the identification of precipitates and of the type of precipitation (homogeneous vs heterogeneous), electron microscopy allows for a quantitative determination of the irradiation conditions which trigger phase changes. Radiation induced precipitation in undersaturated solid solutions is reviewed from the experimental as well as theoretical viewpoint. The irradiation flux is shown to control stability of solid solutions under irradiation
