Elemental quantitative analysis at the cellular level by synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescences

Description

The changes on composition, concentration of some essential trace elements in cells under various physiological and pathological status were investigated. Synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescences (SR-XRF) were applied to analyse the change of cellular Fe, Zn contents and their interrelation in aged and anoxic cells, as well as injured cells by free radicals. In all three groups malondialdehyde (MDA) content was raised together with the Fe/Zn ratio. Zinc or metallothionein (MT), could inhibit lipoperoxidation by decreasing MDA and Fe/Zn ratio. Iron, zinc and their ratio vary in accordance with the physiological status of the cell. SR-XRF is a powerful tool for the quantitative analysis of trace elements in samples of cells
