Physics at 1034 cm-2 s-1
Description
By increasing the luminosity of the SSC to 1034 cm-2 s-1 the physics reach of the machine is extended considerably and it is highly desirable to design the accelerator to handle this luminosity. The authors have shown that 1034 allows an extension in x from 0.30 to 0.38 for QCD jets and a factor of 1.4 to 2 in the mass range for new particles. The detector for this luminosity depends mostly on calorimetry and would require a hermetic, good resolution, radiation-damage resistant, segmented calorimeter. With sufficient iron, muon detection should still be feasible; some minimal central tracking may even be possible. Finally the authors have shown that Monte Carlo studies indicate that they can trigger on interesting events even when they are overlapped with many ''low'' p/sub T/ QCD events. While the trigger thresholds must be increased somewhat to achieve the additional factor of 10 rejection necessary for a given data rate, these thresholds are generally still well below the levels for the events of interest. Obviously, the real limits for the SSC will only be understood with experience, but the initial indications for high luminosity are certainly encouraging
