Description

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have observed the Bs meson in e+e- annihilation at the Υ(5S) resonance. We have fully reconstructed 14 candidates consistent with Bs decays into final states with a J/ψ or a Ds(*)-. The probability that this is a background fluctuation is less than 8 x 10-10. We have established that Bs production proceeds predominantly through the creation of Bs*B-bars* pairs with σ(e+e- → Bs*B-bars*) =0[ .11-0.03+0.04(stat) ± 0.02(syst)] nb. The following limits are set: σ(e+e- → BsB-bars)/σ(e+e- → Bs*B-bars*) < 0.16 and [σ(e+e- → BsB-bars*) + σ(e+e- → Bs*B-bars)]/σ(e+e- → Bs*B-bars*) < 0.16 (90% CL). In a separate analysis, by comparing production rates of Ds+ mesons in Υ(5S) and Υ(4S) decays, an estimate of the ratio of Bs(*) B-bars(*) to the total bb-bar quark pair production at the Υ(5S) energy of (16 ± 3 ± 6)% is obtained
